Hog’s Breath Cafe featured on the Australian version of Undercover Boss a few months ago. Some people probably watched the show and picked up some business management tips. We watched the show, saw a massive dessert and used Google to find out whether there was a Hog’s Breath in NZ. There are currently two, one in Hamilton and one in Napier. Hamilton is just a hop, skip and a jump down the road from Auckland, hopping, skipping and jumping being just the things to be doing before eating the massive dessert that is the Hoggies Rocky Road Sundae ($17.50).
The base of the sundae is chocolate mud cake, four scoops of vanilla and four scoops of strawberry ice cream are on top, next comes fudge sauce, marshmellows, strawberry topping, whipped cream and toasted coconut. Two biscuit twirls are planted on the summit and you have a feast more than enough for two (the two of us anyway). We almost got through it, we weren’t sure whether to be proud or ashamed, but we were definitely full.
If you’re a real glutton for gastric punishment you could dine on a Wednesday night when you can eat all the ribs you can for $25. (If you think all you can eat ribs is going the whole hog, I just read about JW Marriott’s 12 hour all you can eat brunch. The author stayed the distance from 12 noon to midnight. If you’d like to try a 12 hour eat-a-thon you’ll need to catch a plane to Dubai where you can pig out in 5 star style – Time Out Dubai – the city’s best brunches).
At Hog’s Breath, a drink and two scoops of ice cream are complimentary for children when ordering a meal off the Kids Menu. There’s a vintage Massey Ferguson tractor just inside the door and it proved more appealing to one little boy than eating ice cream with his Mum. It would’ve been good if the tractor gave rides, after the sundae we felt more like Boss Hogg and Lulu than Luke and Daisy Duke and wouldn’t have minded a lift back to the cadillac. Find Hog’s Breath Cafe at 29 Hood Street in Hamilton.
