Thunder Jet, Earnslaw Park, Beach Street, Queenstown
“I was caught, In the middle of Lake Wakatipu, I looked ’round, And I knew there was no turning back, The engine revved, And I thought what could I do?, And I knew ….. hold on, you’re on the Thunder Jet”.
The real AC/DC lyrics boom out of the stereo on the Thunder Jet as you speed across Lake Wakatipu. Our driver Kylie was as good at spinning the boat as Angus is with his riffs. Usually when someone gives you the finger it’s not a good sign, but on the Thunder Jet it’s a sign you’re in for a spin ….
When you’re not experiencing wheelies on water you get a glimpse of luxury lakeside properties, including one reputed to have a 24 car garage. As you leave Queenstown behind and head for the hills look out for wild deer and goats – wildlife spotting was one of the highlights of our trip.
Big thanks to Kylie for her hospitality. A one hour trip on the Thunder Jet is $95 for adults, check out Bookme for discounts. Thunder Jet’s location on the waterfront means it’s walking distance from many accommodation options, a bonus for those short on time.
Shotover Jet, Gorge Road, Arthurs Point
It’s been a while since we’ve been on the Shotover Jet, but I think it’s fair to say the Shotover Jet provides the bigger adrenalin injection. It’s the location that makes this ride so thrilling – the Shotover River Canyons are narrow and rocky, add a high powered jet boat and your knuckles may turn white, and not just from the cold.
A 25 minute Shotover Jet trip is $129 for adults or there’s a $99 sunrise departure and combos. Bookme advertise $1 Shotover Jet deals but I suspect you’d have to be faster than a speeding jet boat to secure one of those.
A short video taken from the shore – we didn’t risk taking our camera on the Shotover ….. Are you ready for a good time?
