A night behind bars – Jailhouse Accommodation, Christchurch

The white collar crim has always used his ill gotten gains to pay for his own ensuite bathroom, but I convinced him to do time at Jailhouse Accommodation in Christchurch. Although we had to share a bathroom, spending the night wasn’t a harsh sentence. Warm beds, a light and sunny social area, and the chance to spend the night somewhere unusual made it a worthwhile stay for us.

Curious or creepy? Wunderbar, Lyttelton

Wunderbar prides itself on being unique, I’m going to call it curious, and a little bit creepy. The dolls head light shades could be considered cute, and if you’re going to behead some victims and display their heads in a cabinet it’s probably best they belong to Sindy and Barbie.

It was the hair roller light shades (with hair) that led me into creepy territory. I don’t know if the hair was real, neither of us was keen to examine it closely. ¬†I couldn’t help wonder though whether hair from a hundred nanas was hanging … Read the rest

Gap Filler, Christchurch – Air Guitaring at the Dance-O-Mat

Gap Filler¬†makes use of empty spaces in Christchurch by filling them with temporary creative projects that benefit the community. It’s a reality in the city that there are many empty spaces that buildings once occupied.

As visitors to the city the projects have put smiles on our faces and I don’t think there’s anywhere else in the world where we could plug our iPOD into a washing machine, add $2, and “play” an air guitar at a Dance-O-Mat.

Cashel Mall Re:START, Christchurch

Project Re:START helped 27 retailers open the doors of their shipping container businesses in Cashel Mall, Christchurch in October 2011. The devastating February 2011 earthquake and subsequent after shocks made much of the inner city a no go zone, but the opening of the shipping container shopping centre has returned retail to the city centre. We weren’t sure what to expect but what we found was a colourful jigsaw of containers divided into two shopping precincts with foot paths, bench seating and gardens.
