Thanks, your comments are much appreciated. I had a look at Google maps, it's 70 - 86 km from the airport to the trench depending on which road is taken. Asking a taxi driver to take you would probably be best, just ask them the price first and make sure you're happy with it, I don't know how much it would be, but it won't be any where near as expensive as travelling in NZ by taxi. Hiring a rental car from the airport is another option, but I don't know if you can organise a licence at the airport. It's definitely worth going to the trench, it's a real highlight on Upolu. I have a map of Upolu island that I can scan and email to you if you'd like, just let me know.
