Wendelton Guinea Pig Village, Nelson

Guinea pigs aren’t related to pigs and they don’t come from Guinea, they are the domesticated relations of the Brazilian guinea pig. The guinea pigs at Wendelton Guinea Pig Village couldn’t care less, it’s all about friendship and carrots for them.

Carrots please

Carrots please

And carrots are good for them because they’re hard, and guinea pigs teeth are continually growing. However carrot is like cake to guinea pigs, and another guinea pig fact – the little critters can get diabetes, so too much carrot is a no no. They like lots of friends though and are very sociable, so village life must suit them.

Although like people maybe guinea pigs need time alone too, like this guy or girl at Swinestone Castle. Maybe he’s in a bad mood, or it’s a she about to give birth, I don’t know, but the guinea pig looked like it wanted to return to its mates.

There are a few buildings in the village – a pink Piggy Wiggy Hair and Beauty Salon, The Happy Hogg Backpackers, Lord Guinea School, and an empty Guinea Guinness Pub – smart guinea pigs.

Wendelton Guinea Pig Village is in the garden at Eyebright Country Store, 48 McShane Road near Richmond. The store is full to bursting with homeware, gift ideas and jewellery, there’s also a Christmas Shop.

A gold coin gets you into the guinea pig village, don’t forget the carrots – pick up a small container from the store. If your kids fall in love with the friendly critters there is a book about them – ‘Too Many Guinea Pigs’ by Grant Winter and Peter Owen.

  1. Be so good to make the acquaintance of these friendly little piggy wigs. When I manage to get there I’ll take snaps to take back to my computer where the software does what my eyes can’t now.. There’s always more than one way around a problem.

    • Hi Jewel
It’s wonderful when technology can help in this way. They’re wise words ‘there’s always more than one way around a problem’ and they’re words I needed to read today, thanks for stopping by.
