Dunedin Street Art

The last time we were in Dunedin I photographed and wrote about the art work on bus shelters on Otago Peninsula. Two years on, there are more than 25 walls of art in Dunedin city. Much of the art work was facilitated by Dunedin Street Art  volunteers who have helped bring art and artists into the streets.

You can find the street art at random or download a Street Art Trail map, or pick up a copy from the i-SITE on The Octagon. A two hour Street Art Tour may also be an option (ask at the i-SITE). We picked up a Street Art Trail map and all of the photos were taken on the trail, except for the first two murals which we found while roaming around Dunedin.

The fairy tale themed mural (above) by local Filipa (the Fairy) Crofskey is on a wall at The Playhouse Theatre on Albany Street.

The Good Earth Cafe at 765 Cumberland Street has this colourful mural in their rear courtyard (artist unknown, at least to me).

‘Love is in the Air’ by Polish artist Natalia Rak is cheeky and cheerful with more than a hint of surprise, if I lived in Dunedin I know I’d make detours just to see it. Find ‘Love is in the Air’ on the corner of Liverpool and Bond Streets. (number 11 on the map)

Fellow Polish artist Bezt (one half of the duo Etam Cru) created ‘When the hunter becomes the hunted’ at 142 High Street. (number 21 on the map)

Nearby on the Scenic Hotel is a three storey mural by Australian artist Fintan Magee (number 23 on the map).

Chinese born, South African based DALeast painted this representation of the extinct Haast Eagle in the car park at 19 Stafford Street. I can almost hear the demise of the species as I look at the eagle flying apart. (number 17 on the map)

Visit PixelPancho on Instagram and you will see a robotic theme in many of his images. ‘Riding Dreams’ is on the Chipmunks building at 361 Princes Street, it makes me think of steam punk. Any walls need livening up Oamaru? (number 14 on the map)

PixelPancho and UK based Phlegm collaborated on the human robot meets long limbed creature/humans on the Thyme building at 5 Stafford Street (number 16 on the map).

Phlegm also painted ‘Song Bird Pipe Organ’ on the side of the Dunedin Musicians Club at 12 Manse Street (number 20 on the map). More of Phlegm’s work can be found at 12 Moray Place, and more recently at 83 Moray Place where he has painted a giant moa.

The vibrant skulls by Melbourne based Snot Rag do one of the things I think street art does best, brightens up an otherwise uninviting alleyway. (Find it next door to 26 Stafford Street, number 18 on the map)

Dunedin based artist Jon Thom painted ‘Annabel’ on Vogel Street, her happiness is contagious. (number 3 on the map) Jon Thom’s work can also be found at The Artist’s Room gallery.

    • Hi Filipa
We love your mural and it is so appropriately placed being on the theatre. It’s a shame you’re not included on the street art map, maybe because Albany Street is a few blocks out of the city centre? Still, it would be good to see your mural included when the map is updated. Keep up your great work, it is much admired and appreciated.
