*Unfortunately The Cat Lounge closed on 21 August 2018. Barista Cats in Auckland city is still operating.*
New Zealand’s first cat cafe – The Cat Lounge, opened in Glenfield, Auckland in early November. I went along last week for a look see. I stepped into a smart black and white cafe with a big Thank You wall acknowledging all those who contributed to The Cat Lounge via crowd funding platform Kickstarter.
Two glass doors separate the cat lounge from the cafe, you can take food and drink in with the cats but I chose to have coffee and cake in the cafe.
Up to 20 people can visit the cats in the lounge and spend up to an hour with them at a cost of $10 adults, $8 kids and seniors. I didn’t book, but I recommend it, especially if you’re making a special trip, it was surprisingly busy on a Thursday afternoon.
Couches are provided for people too, along with free wifi and toys to help keep the resident cats and kittens entertained.
There are bridges for the cats to cross, board walks to climb, and an artificial grassed area with natural light.
Two cat doors open into a people free room where the cats can have some time out, the clever kitties below got time out by climbing up into the roof space for a snooze.
I’m in the camp with the people who can’t wake a sleeping cat or kitten so I was happy to watch the cuteness overload happening around me. Little Ron came visiting and was keen to get in my handbag, I thought I better settle for taking his photo, tempting as it was to take him home.
If you love cats a visit to The Cat Lounge is sure to take you to your happy place. Find The Cat Lounge at 173A Archers Road in Glenfield. Alternatively, Auckland’s second cat cafe Barista Cats is at Level 1, 95 Queen Street in the city.

Nice one, I’d recommend you make a booking for the weekend as it can get busy, hope your family enjoys it.
